  9. Our main focus is how to send effective emails, when a phone call is better, interpreting one's meaning in a message, using slang, broadcasting to multiple persons, and more.

To get your point across, do your comments answer any of the relevant questions: who, what, where, when, why, how and/or how much. Answer these questions in any communication, and you will be the professional, and more employable as a result.

Remember, there is no such thing as a private email. Consider anything you say as public. If you don't want it being seen or read by anyone in particular, don't write it!. Pick up the phone instead, and hope they aren't recording you without your permission.

Don't joke around during a serious situation. Just ask Michael Brown, former Director of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, on the morning of Hurricane Katrina.

Clarify your meaning. Simple questions without explanation can be taken so many different ways: Will you be late for the meeting? Remember who you are in relation to the person you are writing; employer, employee, colleague, parent, friend, casual acquaintance, etc.

Don't use all capital letters. This is considered as shouting, and is the number one complaint from email readers.

Michael Lauf highly recommends reading the book entitled "Send - the Essential guide to Email, for Office and Home" by David Shipley, available in the NLS BARD program.
